. Parasite Control for Cattle

Dr. Megan Van Emon, MSU Extension Beef Specialist will discuss parasite and pest management of cattle, from pour-ons to fly tags and using them properly and the potential for pest tolerance to these methods. Van Emon will discuss the use of “natural” products, such as garlic and capsasin (peppers) for fly control.

2:00 p.m.Grasshopper Management

Grasshoppers Anyone? Grasshoppers certainly made their presence known in 2020.  Information will be shared on grasshopper predictions for 2021.  A brief overview of the APHIS Rangeland Control Program will be offered, discussion on private rangeland and pasture control options (including RAATs), as well as cropland grasshopper issues and control options.

3:00p.m. Forage Production Challenges

Mike Schuldt, MSU Custer County Extension Agent
Forage producers are faced with many challenges including control of the alfalfa weevil control and managing risk in annual cereal forages. Schuldt will discuss alfalfa weevil management addressing chemical control options, chemical resistance and IPM management strategies. Information will also be presented on understanding nitrate risk and how to reduce the risk to livestock when feeding annual cereal forage crops such as millet, barley, triticale and oats.

1:00-2:00 - Megan Van-Emon, MSU Extension Beef Specialist: Discussion of  Cattle Pests and Parasites.
The uses of pour-ons, fly tags, and other methods of administering pest control. Focus will be on proper use to avoid development of resistance and maximum effectiveness of the control products.  Information will also be provided on the use of garlic as a fly control and the potential for sulfate issues. Main pests and parasites covered will be lice and flies.

2:00-3:00 - Grasshoppers Anyone?
Grasshoppers Anyone? 3:00-4:00 - Eric Miller, Garfield County Extension Agent; Cheatgrass Management.
Control measures for range, pasture and crops for winter annual grass such as Downy Brome, Japanese Brome and Ventenata will be discussed. New chemicals and their labeled uses including the latest Bio herbicide just approved. Proper use, safety, IPM and specific label restrictions will be covered in the presentation.
